The 17th annual JSE Spire Awards took place on 26 October 2018 . The annual award ceremony is seen as the benchmark for the South African Capital Markets as it recognises and celebrates achievements voted for by the market.
This year the Avior Derivatives and Fixed income team scooped up two first places as Best Research Team: Quantitative Research and Best Agency Broker: Bonds. They were also awarded second places as Best Dealing Team: Equity Delta Derivatives, Best Dealing Team: Equity Options and Best Agency Broker: Listed Forex Options.
The team were ranked among industry peers that included the likes of ABSA Capital, Tradition, Legae Peresec and CJS Securities.
“We congratulate and recognise this year’s winners for their hard work, dedication and the contribution they make to the financial eco-system. The ceremony not only allows us to showcase the successes of some of our issuers, members and clients, but to also tell investors about the achievements of the strongest players in the industry. By working together we demonstrate that the South African financial eco-system is in good hands, we have the expertise to be recognised among the best in the world,” says Donna Nemer, Director, Capital Markets at the JSE.
The JSE enhanced the awards by incorporating additional categories to the Commodities market awards and adding new awards in Equity and Equity Derivatives Markets. In addition, the voting process was managed by Intellidex, an independent leader in South African Capital Markets and financial services research.
This year, from January to September, overall nominal bond market turnover totalled R22.9 trillion, up by 13% from equivalent period in 2017. The repo nominal turnover was R15.4 trillion, while the standard nominal turnover was R7.0 trillion. The JSE has seen significant growth in the Currency Derivative and Interest Rate Derivative Markets with the number of contracts traded up 8% in the Interest Rate derivative Market and up 28% in the Currency Derivative Market.
